The 2022 Toyota Tundra vs. The 2021 Toyota Tundra

You can’t deny the popularity of the pickup truck. Year after year, the Top 5 vehicles sold in the U.S. regularly holds two, three – sometimes even four different models of the pickup! While the big 3 American automakers – Ford, Dodge, and Chevy – put out instantly recognizable trucks, Toyota has been quietly building the most reliable pickups in the world. Top Gear did its best to destroy a Toyota Hilux – and failed. The Toyota Tacoma and the Toyota Tundra regularly top the resale charts when it comes to holding their value. So what makes Tundras so popular – and is it worth buying last year’s Tundra model instead of the 2022 edition?

Performance

In the Tundra’s first redesign in 14 years, one of the most notable changes is under the hood. The 2022 Toyota Tundra is the first full-size pickup to not offer a V8 engine. Toyota has seen the shift to six-cylinder engines by the buying public and responded accordingly.

That doesn’t mean the new Tundra is losing any power though. The base twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine produces up to 389 horsepower and 479 ft-lb of torque. With a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds, it can pull 1,800 pounds more than the 2021 Tundra model!

Also available in the 2022 Tundra is the i-FORCE MAX, a hybrid unit that uses a similar 3.5-liter engine, combined with hybrid power. This is a hybrid built for power though – kicking out up to 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque.

Both of these engines are mated to a new 10-speed automatic transmission that offers great power range, along with solid shifts that work better with most driving styles. More importantly, the 2022 Tundra does away with the leaf spring rear suspension that was in the 2021 Toyota Tundra. The new coil spring rear, and available adaptive variable suspension, offers improved handling, greater stability, and a much more pleasant ride.

Design & Comfort

Pickup trucks weren’t necessarily shining beacons of design and comfort when they first became popular – they were tough work trucks. But today, a truck needs to be attractive and welcoming, while also being able to tackle workloads.

On the workload side of things, the Double Cab can be equipped with a 6.5- or 8.1-foot aluminum-reinforced composite bed, while the CrewMax gets a 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed. This enables you to take full advantage of the great payload capacities! These 2022 bed sizes are the same as the 2021 Tundra, and the large beds can handle the payload capacity of the Tundra with ease.

From the outside, the redesign is clear, with the 2022 Toyota Tundra sharing almost no similarities to the outgoing model beyond the Toyota emblem up front. A new hexagonal grille, pronounced wheel arches, a sporty tailgate featuring a tight tuck at the top for a spoiler effect, and muscular sheet metal have brought the Tundra in line with the macho design language of its competitors. This is a massive departure from the previous model, which had fairly vanilla design language. Side by side, the 2021 and 2022 Tundra look like they’re from totally different car makers.

The interior has also received a redesign, improving on features as well as spaciousness. A broad horizontal dash makes it easy to get in and out of, while the center console-mounted shift lever and the rest of the cab’s interior controls have been designed for easy operation even by drivers and passengers who are wearing work gloves. You can choose from a Double Cab or CrewMax Cab – both seat five, although the rear seats in the Double Cab are limited to 33.3 inches of legroom versus 41.6 in the CrewMax. That’s the difference between kids or adults fitting back there. The rear seat in both can be folded up for additional in-cab storage compartments.

Technology

No modern vehicle is complete without the latest technology, and the Tundra is no exception. A touchscreen audio multimedia system is standard on all the 2022 Tundra models – but while the 2021 models had a 7-inch standard unit and an optional 8-inch unit, the new generation allows you to choose from a base 8-inch version or an upgraded 14-inch version. As with the outgoing model, the 2022 Tundra features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration across the board. While the 2021 Tundra offered a rearview camera standard, it didn’t have upgrades. The redesigned 2022 model offers Panoramic View Monitor and Multi-Terrain Monitor upgrades for better exterior visibility.

Safety

The 2022 Toyota Tundra upgrades to the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 system to provide the highest level of advanced safety features of any truck on the market today. While the 2.0 system in the 2021 Tundra is great, this update adds in PreCollision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist and Road Sign Assist. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and trailer detection are also both optional on both model years – however, the 2022 Tundra has made them available on the SR5 trim and up, while on the 2021 model they were standard only to the Platinum and 1794 trims.

The Winner

There’s no doubt that the 2022 Toyota Tundra is vastly improved over the 2021 model – despite the outgoing version promising incredible resale value down the road. While 2021 models are great at discounted year-end pricing, there’s no doubt that the 2022 Toyota Tundra will be the better bang for your money now, and long into the future!

Test drive both of these powerful trucks at Bobby Rahal Toyota in Mechanicsburg and decide the winner for yourself!
