2023 Toyota Sequoia vs. 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe
The full-size SUV has become the workhorse of busy parents, sports teams, and businesses across the country. A category that offers room for up to nine passengers, plus space for equipment and luggage, it’s known for versatility – but also for poor fuel economy and mediocre handling. Redesigned for 2023, the Toyota Sequoia looks to change this perception. Meanwhile, the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe continues unchanged. How do these two juggernauts compare?
Performance
In a move that stands out in the full-size class, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia comes with a single hybridized twin-turbo V-6 powertrain. The 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe, on the other hand, offers a more traditional selection of engines – a small V8, a large V8, and a six-cylinder turbodiesel.
But what’s the point of a wide selection when you can offer a single powertrain that is better all around? Thanks to a 10-speed transmission and the supplemental electric motor, the Sequoia’s i-Force Max hybrid system turns out 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque combined. This means great acceleration off the line and the ability to tow up to 9500 pounds when properly equipped. Perhaps the most impressive part is the fuel economy – 21 MPG city and 24 MPG highway with rear-wheel drive or 19 MPG city and 22 MPG highway with four-wheel drive!
The Tahoe, on the other hand, offers a mix that doesn’t measure up. Both V8 engines get lackluster fuel economy – the best you’ll see is 16 MPG city and 20 MPG highway in the 5.3-liter V8. This set-up also gets the maximum towing capacity of the Tahoe line-up, but at 8400 pounds, it’s quite a ways behind the Sequoia. You can get good fuel economy out of the turbodiesel – up to 21 MPG city and 28 MPG highway. But it comes with having to deal with the limited availability and higher cost of diesel, along with a maximum towing capacity of only 8200 pounds.

Design & Comfort
Both the 2023 Toyota Sequoia and the 2023 Chevy Tahoe offer spacious cabins, seating for seven or eight passengers, and flexibility thanks to easy-stow seating. The redesign for 2023 helps the Sequoia stand out in a crowd though, borrowing the grille and bulging wheel flares of its Tundra and Tacoma siblings. The Tahoe continues to sport the boxy, smooth-sided sheet metal of the previous generation.
The design quality carries over to the interior as well, with the Sequoia offering trappings that are notably upscale compared to the Tahoe. Ride quality is better as well, thanks to an independent front suspension and solid rear axle with coil-over rear springs.

Technology
One of the biggest things you’ll see in the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is one of the biggest things in the segment – a 14.0-inch touch screen! Big, clear, and responsive, it dwarfs the Tahoe’s 12.3-inch screen, and pretty much every other touch screen in the segment. The Sequoia will also appeal to the music lover, with an available 14-speaker JBL sound system with a subwoofer and amplifier.
Bluetooth music and hands-free calling, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, are standard on both the Sequoia and Tahoe. Both vehicles also offer a bevy of USB media and charging ports throughout the cabin, along with QI wireless device charging on higher-level trims.

Safety
The Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 system is a class leader, and is standard on every version of the 2023 Toyota Sequoia. This suite includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beams, and Road Sign Assist. A Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Trailer Merge Warning is standard, along with Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking. The Sequoia helps eliminate blind spots with a standard Panoramic View Monitor with cameras along with a backup camera with a projected path.
While the Tahoe offers most of these features, many of them require going to higher trim levels and adding costly options packages – for instance, Surround View is standard only on the highest trim level. Toyota doesn’t feel that safety should be optional, or cost extra.
