The All-New 2023 Toyota BZ4X

The electric vehicle market is poised to be incredibly lucrative in the near future. Once thought of as mere fiction, many countries are now making steps towards transitioning away from conventional gasoline-powered vehicles.

Toyota is jumping into the conversation feet-first. The 2023 Toyota BZ4X is the first entry in Toyota’s bZ brand umbrella, their move towards a full line-up of electric vehicles within the next quarter century. It’s their first foray into the field, but as a compact SUV, it’s right up Toyota’s alley!

Performance Features
The Toyota BZ4X comes with a single mechanical system, although you do get the choice of front- or all-wheel drive. This leads to some different output results.

The AC synchronous electric generator motor sends 150 kW to the front wheels in the FWD bZ4X. IN the all-wheel drive edition, you instead get two individual 80 kW motors, one in the front and one in the rear. This results in a total output of 160 kW. What does this mean in power going to the ground? Well, in the FWD versions you get 201 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque for excellent acceleration. All-wheel drive offers a little more horsepower – 214 horses – but really adds on the torque, upping it to 248 lb-ft, which pushes it to 60 MPH from a standing start in 7.7 seconds. Pretty quick for an SUV!

Driving range with a full charge depends on which drive you choose, as well as the package – ranging from 222 miles on the loaded AWD Limited, to 252 miles on the base FWD XLE trim. The lithium-ion battery pack features standard fast charging – it can hit 80% charge in only 30 minutes on the 150kW direct current quick charging stations! AC Level 2 can go from Low Battery to 100% in roughly 9.5 hours, although Level 1 charging will take up to 50 hours.

Style and Technology
Stylish and aerodynamic, the exterior of the BZ4X modernizes existing design language. From the curved front bumper and swelling hood edges, back to the powerful rear stance, there is futuristic edginess to the bZ4X.

Inside the bZ4X, you’ll get a high-tech twist on Toyota’s existing design language. Soundproofing glass and wind-noise reduction will help to provide a quiet ride, while a low, wide dash offers superior visibility for the driver. The dash is home to the 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia with six speakers and connectivity that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. SiriusXM is included, with an included 3-month trial subscription. Hi-fi fans can upgrade to the premium JBL nine-speaker system, available on the Limited trims.

Seating for five is generous, with spacious front seats. The second-row space is reasonable for a compact SUV, offering 35.3 inches of legroom. It’s incredibly flexible as well! With all seating in place, there’s still 27.7 cubic feet of cargo space in the rear. Stow the second row, and the 56.9 cubic feet of maximum storage is plenty for moving, antiques, hauling mulch and other home project material, and so much more!

Upgraded sensors have improved response times for systems including Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beams, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Road Sign Assist. A Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is also standard, providing safety for pedestrians and other vehicles that get caught in your blind spot. Trim Levels
Starting out, the 2023 Toyota BZ4X will only be available in two trim levels. However, both trim levels will be available with the choice of front- or all-wheel drive.

Using the usual Toyota naming pattern, the base version of the bZ4X is the XLE trim sits on 18-inch alloy wheels, and features a ducktail rear spoiler for a sporty appearance. Four USB-C charge points – two up front, two in the rear – and one USB-A media port are standard on the XLE trim, as is Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging! A leather-trimmed steering wheel is standard, with optional heating. 6-way manually adjustable fabric seating is standard, with available heating. Dual zone automatic climate control keeps everyone comfortable!

Step up to the Limited trim, and you get 20-inch multi-spoke machine-finished alloy wheels with gray accents, and the option for a split roof rear spoiler instead of the ducktail. The exterior gets some chrome accents, while the headlights are upgraded to multi-LED units from the standard Bi-LED projectors. You also get a foot-activated power liftgate with jam protection for easy loading! Upholstery is full SofTex, with 8-way power adjustability provided for the driver’s seat. Heated and ventilated front seats are standard, while heated rear seats are available. The optional front radiant foot-and-leg heater is a great addition for folks in cold-weather regions!

The goal with the bZ4X is to kick off a series of BEVs, planning to introduce 15 total – and seven new bZ BEV models – by 2025!
